Mountain Biking in the High Atlas                           «back to the gallery

This picture shows a loyal customer (Dr Peter J) leaving two mules and another rider flailing in his wake as he powers his way up another climb in the High Atlas Mountains. No actually, I think the mules may be gaining on him.....Whatever the real story is, the picture illustrates another typical day's mountain biking in the Atlas Mountains. Big climbs, big descents, big landscapes and big skies. Thanks to Morocco's unrivalled network of dirt roads (constructed by villagers themselves), mountain biking groups are able to access some of the most remote and unspoilt parts of Morocco, getting to the parts that other tours cannot reach. Most of the riding is along broad tracks but there are always singletrack sections to keep the interest level high. Our mountain biking itineraries are all "journeys" so that riders feel like they are seeing as much of the country as possible in a short period of time, so as not to feel limited to one region. Anyone who has biked in Morocco will have been staggered by the variety of landscapes on offer - one of the real attractions of the country. One of our trips, the "Atlas Sahara Grand Tour" explores the gorges and fertile valleys of Central High Atlas, the craggy volcanic peaks and vast plateaux of the Jebel Sirwa range, the date palm oases of the Draa Valley and the dunes of the Sahara...... a huge variety of scenery and environments. All of our biking trips are fully supported with a crew of MTB guide, cook, and support driver(s) and you can hire a mountain bike if you'd rather not bring your own. Although the riding on our trips tends not to be particularly technical you need to be able to control your bike adequately in rocky conditions and it is particularly important to be "bike fit" as some climbs in the Atlas Mountains are tough enough to rival anywhere in the world! What Morocco can deliver that most European destinations can't offer is genuine adventure. Whilst you can find excellent trails in the Alps, the Pyrenees or in the Picos, there you're unlikely to uncover such a "different" and all-embracing rural culture that hasn't changed for centuries. For more information on mountain biking tours in Morocco visit our tours/mountain biking pages or visit the site of our associate tour operator for MTB tours, Saddle Skedaddle (www.skedaddle.co.uk). Dr Peter J enjoyed his experiences in Morocco so much that he came back and rode the same itinerary two years running. We expect to get a call from him any day now to rebook to make it three in a row!
