This photograph was taken at sunset in the Marrakech Palmeraie, a vast date palm grove that surrounds the city to the east of the "Ville Nouvelle". In terms of areas of interest in which to stay, the Palmeraie competes with the new town and the medina but offers the luxury of space that the other areas can't offer. The Marrakech medina, with its labyrinth of alleyways is the place to be if you want to be in the heart of the action and is the part of town that offers "riad" accommodation. The Ville Nouvelle is characterised by larger more modern-style hotels with gardens, pools and plenty of facilities - in a sense offering accessibility with all of the comforts that come with large modern hotels. What the Palmeraie offers is character, fresh air, space, and, in most cases no shortage of luxury. There is a long list of excellent villas in this area of town, all of which offer large luxuriant gardens, swimming pools, spacious rooms and suites together with transport to transfer guests in and out of the medina which lies around twenty minutes from the heart of the Palmeraie. Jnane Tamsna, Les Deux Tours, Dar Zemora, Caravanserai, Villa Janna, Ksar Char Bagh and Villa des Palmiers are just some of the better properties in the area. Further afield, a string of hotels and guest houses have sprung up between Marrakech and the High Atlas Mountains. The Ourika road, which is the most important access (in tourism terms) into the mountains is home to a number of rustic guest houses offering inexpensive accommodation for those wanting a more peaceful holiday experience. The advantage of this region is that the mountains are easily accessible to those who have their own transport. Many visitors prefer to visit the hectic medina of Marrakech during the day and retreat to the peace and calm of out of town properties at night. Then when the city becomes just too hectic (and, at certain times of the year, just too hot) guests have the option of cooling off in a swimming pool in a shady garden.
