One of the many highlights of this diverse country is a “road trip” into the south of Morocco and to the gateway to the Sahara Desert. This epic journey over the High Atlas Mountains and into the Deep South of Morocco takes you, either by self-drive vehicle, or with an English speaking driver, to the highest dunes in Morocco, making strategic stops en route, staying in characterful and convivial local-style accommodation. The dunes at Mergouza rise to 300m above the surrounding Hamada desert, and here you will stay the night under the stars in a traditional Saharan tent camp. The journey to and from the desert is a circular one, allowing you to experience different sights en route, including the magnificent Ait Benhaddou Ksour (kasbah), the towering Todra Gorge, and the impressive Draa Valley, where sub-Saharan influences merge with Berber and Arab culture. We recommend at least 4 nights for the trip, and the suggested itinerary includes overnight stays in traditional “riad” accommodation in exotic Marrakech.
