Morocco has so many facets, from sweeping, majestic, landscapes to absorbing and intoxicating cities. For lovers of history and architecture, the country’s Imperial Cities – Rabat, Meknes, Fez and Marrakech – are must-visit places on a long list of places not to be missed in Morocco. All have been capital cities at one point in their history, all are rich in interesting monuments, all offer medinas which are akin to living museums, where life has changed little in centuries, and each city has very much a style and ambience of its own. Rabat is the conservative capital of Morocco, Meknes is particularly rich in monuments, and is situated close to the Roman ruins of Volubilis, Fez is the medieval Islamic complex par excellence, and Marrakech mixes cosmopolitan and African influences with exotic street life. We recommend being accompanied by an English-speaking driver and taking advantage of local city guides to make the most of each place. As always the focus is very much on small hotels with local character to add to the traditional experience!
